SureNail vs StrikeZone — what actually differs
Owens Corning SureNail
SureNail bonds a woven engineered-fabric strip across the nailing zone before the shingle is packaged. That strip widens the pull-through path of every nail and holds the shingle mat together where fasteners land. In independent uplift testing, SureNail measurably raises the wind speed required to lift a shingle tab.
GAF StrikeZone
StrikeZone is a wider factory-printed nailing area on Timberline HDZ. It doesn't add a physical reinforcement layer — instead it gives installers a bigger target so mis-nails are less likely. On roofs where the installer already lands nails accurately, the real-world lift resistance is similar to an ordinary common-bond shingle.
Bottom line: SureNail is a physical performance upgrade; StrikeZone is an installation-quality upgrade. Both close the gap on human error, but only one changes the mat itself.
Read the fine print before you sign
A manufacturer-backed system warranty ranks above any contractor's own warranty for one reason: it survives the contractor. If a roofing company closes, changes hands, or simply stops answering the phone, a warranty backed by Owens Corning or GAF is still honored. A contractor's warranty is only worth as much as the contractor still being in business, and that is as true of ours as it is of anyone's.
Atrium holds Owens Corning Platinum Preferred, the top tier of the Owens Corning contractor network, which makes the enhanced Owens Corning system warranty available on our installs. We also hold GAF Certified Plus, which makes the GAF Silver Pledge available. These system warranties cover material and, at these tiers, workmanship, and they are registered with the manufacturer in your name.
In Central Texas, the biggest warranty gotcha is ventilation: both manufacturers can void wind and mat coverage if attic ventilation is under-spec. Every replacement we install includes a balanced intake and exhaust calculation to protect the warranty. Whichever system you choose, read the coverage terms and the pro-ration schedule on the document you are actually issued, not on a brochure.

Both manufacturers run contractor programs with several tiers, and the warranty a homeowner ends up holding depends on the standing of whoever does the install. Atrium holds Owens Corning Platinum Preferred and GAF Certified Plus, so on an Owens Corning system we register the enhanced Owens Corning system warranty, and on a GAF system we register the Silver Pledge. Those two are the products being compared here.
Class 4 options from both brands
Class 4 impact resistance (UL 2218, 2" steel-ball drop) is what earns most Texas insurance discounts — typically 15–30% off the wind/hail premium.
Owens Corning: Duration Storm and Duration Flex both use SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) polymer-modified asphalt. SBS stays flexible in cold and absorbs hail impact without fracturing the mat.
GAF: Timberline AS II uses polymer-modified asphalt to achieve Class 4. Performance is comparable in lab testing; our field data slightly favors SBS-modified Duration in hail zones like Boerne and Comfort.
